Searching the Huntington Archive

Enter a descriptive term or a group of terms in the search box and click the 'search' button. The search will retrieve items that match the group of terms (or phrase) entered as a whole, and the individual terms entered independently. If your search returns too many images, you may want to remove keywords from the search, choose different keywords or use the Browse categories. If your search returns too few images, you may want to add keywords to your current search, choose different keywords or try the Browse categories.

Not all images in the collection are available for public access. The browse count numbers displayed throughout this site reflect the number of images available to the public, not the total number of images in the collection.

Search Tips

  • Use Sanskrit diacritic-format spelling, however, without the special characters. Therefore, "Ganesha" should be spelled "Ganesa"; the site "Sanchi" as "Sanci."
  • Wildcards (* or asterisk) are accepted. For example searching for 'stu* ' would give you results with 'stupa' and 'stucco' in them.
  • The sounds like operator '~' (tilde) is accepted. For example searching for Ganesha~ will also give you results which include Ganesa and Ganeshra. This type of search tends to return large results sets, especially when used in association with common terms such as Ganesa or Buddha. Use this kind of search if you are uncertain about the spelling of a term or keyword.
  • The search does not understand special characters (like accents, etc.). It will interpret special characters as symbols rather than as standard text. To obtain relevant results, simply enter search terms without using special characters.
  • The search is not case sensitive. Therefore, "Ganesa" and "ganesa" will return the same results.
  • The search accepts Boolean operators such as AND, OR and NOT. Make sure the Boolean operators are uppercase.
  • It is not necessary to include "AND" between search terms. When you enter a phrase, the search automatically takes the individual terms in the phrase and inserts an 'AND' before searching.

Search History (requires cookies to be enabled)

  • Every search/browse that you conduct, which returns a result set larger than zero, is logged in the systems history for that session only.
  • You can access this history by clicking the 'Previous Searches Today' link at the top right.
  • Your search history is only kept until you close your browser. (Per Session Only.)

Selected Images

  • Use the 'Save Selected Images' feature to save individual images from different searches/browses and group them together. This selection can be accessed by clicking the 'Selected Images' link at the top right of any page.
  • The 'Selected Images' link is only available after the 'Save Selected Images' feature has been used.
  • The 'Save Selected Images' button is located above and to the right of the search/browse results set on each results page.
  • Use the 'Make PowerPoint' feature to download all of your 'Selected Images' as a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Click on the 'Make PowerPoint' button in the 'Selected Images' section to begin download. The process of making a PowerPoint can take several minutes due to the large size and high resolution of the images in the collection. (Important Notice for DIAL-UP USERS: If you are on a dial-up connection, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND using this feature. The files are routinely 10MB or more in size and could take an extended amount of time to download.)
